Spray forming and continuous forming

Abstract

This chapter discusses in detail spray forming, continuous forming, gravity sintering, and billet processing and hot working processes. Spray forming is a process comprising the preparation of a high alloy melt, a gas atomization unit, with the ability to direct the stream of droplets in a scanning oscillation movement over a target, and a target manipulator. The majority of all spray formed products are billets which are sprayed onto a horizontal rotating target. Spray forming has successfully been applied to manufacture tubular products, ring preforms or metallic claddings using mandrels, roll blanks or arbors as a substrate. Powders or powder plus binder blends that develop green strength under pressure can successfully be rolled to green strip. Conform extrusion consists of a grooved rotating disc and a stationary shoe to accept granular material which is blocked by a closure piece with a radial opening shaping the profile of the extrudate. Conform extrusion has mostly been applied to aluminum alloy powders. Gravity sintering is a pressureless forming technology mainly used to produce porous components from spherical bronze as filters or silencers for the pneumatic industry. Horizontal billet spraying with twin nozzle, roll compaction of homogeneous powder and of composite strip, principle of conform extrusion of powdered materials without sintering, billets from powders with and without green strength are all illustrated. During the last decades powder metallurgical processes have proved to be competitive in both respects on many fields making it one of the fastest growing manufacturing technologies for metallic materials.
