13.4 Properties of hardmetals and cermets

Abstract

The chapter first details the standard test methods applicable to hardmetals and cermets. The properties of hardmetals and cermets are dealt with, in the first instance, under the property listings of a number of manufacturers using the appropriate grade designations. The majority of standards associated with hardmetal and cermets emanate from the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) which operates in conjunction with various organisations associated with Specific Countries, e.g. DIN-Germany, BSI-U.K. etc. Hard cutting materials are classified in a table, according to their application, in main groups of chip removal and these groups are subdivided into groups of application. The chapter also contains tables which list the grades of hardmetal and cermets, based on composition and average grain size, commercially available, together with their major property values. The tables illustrate the following: composition and properties of WC-Co hardmetal grades; composition and properties of WC-TiC-Ta (Nb)C-Co complex corrosion resistant hardmetal grades; composition and properties of WC - Co hardmetal grades with small additions of other carbides; composition and properties of complex corrosion resistant hardmetal grades; construction and application data for coated indexable insert metal cutting grades; density, hardness, magnetic coercivity, magnetic saturation, toughness, transverse rupture strength, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity (Young's modulus), Poisson's ratio, tensile strength, fatigue strength, electrical resistivity, abrasion wear resistance, linear coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, specific heat, thermal diffusivity, low temperature and high temperature properties and corrosion resistance of the hardmetals and cermets are also discussed.
