Abstract

This chapter discusses Lij phenomenological coefficients, atomic mobilities and vacancy wind parameter for diffusion in ternary alloys. A general flux-force relation for an n-component alloy is given in terms of independent forces. This section contains an expression for intrinsic coefficients on the basis of a simple atomic mobility model. Three atomic mobilities (βi) for a ternary system can be experimentally determined from values of cumulative intrinsic fluxes past a marker plane with a single couple. The three βi and the vacancy wind parameter (α) describing the diffusional interactions between the components on the lattice-fixed frame in terms of the vacancy wind effect can be determined with a pair of independent ternary diffusion couples characterized by marker planes of similar composition.
