7.1.2.6.1 Processing and microstructure

Abstract

This chapter discusses processing and microstructure of nonoriented (NO) silicon steels. Schematic processing of NO silicon steel is illustrated. Dependence of the average grain size on the final annealing temperature in different types of nonoriented Fe-Si laminations is shown. Effect of S content on the average grain size, and dependence of the final grain size on the heating temperature prior to hot rolling are illustrated. Pole figures and size distribution of precipitates of commercial Fe-Si laminations are figured out. The chapter also tabulates the principal planes and orientations in Fe-Si nonoriented laminations, determined by means of X-ray diffraction. Thickness of the subscale oxide layer versus time during final decarburizing anneal in low alloy Si-Fe laminations is shown and effect of different coatings on punchability of 0.5 mm thick nonoriented Fe-Si laminations is illustrated.
