7.1.3.3.1 Introduction

Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to magnetic properties derived from the hysteresis loop. The dependence of the magnetic induction B on the magnetic field H is important for technical application. This dependence is described by the hysteresis loop, the shape and the magnitude of which depend not only on the material but also on the manner in which the sample is magnetized. Magnetizing conditions include information on the magnitude of the induction or the strength of the exciting magnetic field, the magnetizing frequency, and the time dependence of either the induction or the magnetic field within one period. Commonly a sinusoidal time dependence is used, but ramp or triangular induction is used sometimes. There are two classes of properties which are derived from the hysteresis loop. They are properties describing the magnitude of the hysteresis loop and properties describing the shape of the hysteresis loop. In soft magnetic materials, where the permeability is normally of the order of several thousands, the relative difference between induction B and magnetization M is very small and may be neglected in practically all cases.
