Abstract

This chapter briefly discusses the properties of surface atoms and presents the essential theorem related to reduced coordination. The properties of surface atoms are often related to their reduced coordination to other atoms, e.g., atoms on the (111) surface of a face-centred cubic crystal have only 9 nearest neighbours whereas bulk atoms have 12. Stereographic plot of the normals to the surfaces considered for face-centred cubic, body-centred cubic, NaCl, diamond and hexagonal close-packed structures is also presented.
