ZnS/(Zn,Mg)S quantum wells

Abstract

This chapter discusses zincblende ZnS/(Zn,Mg)S quantum wells (QWs) which have the highest excitonic transition energies of II-VI quantum structures. The data for band-gap energy, exciton binding energy, lattice constant and valence-band offset are presented. Photoluminescence (PL) investigations on ZnS/(Zn,Mg)S single quantum wells are reported. The samples are grown on a (Zn,Mg)S buffer so that the ZnS QW is under biaxial tensile strain and the light-hole (lh) exciton is the excitonic ground state. The lh and heavy-hole (hh) exciton energy deduced from the PL experiments are compared to a model including strain effects.
