Abstract

This chapter discusses literature on electronic structure of 3d transition metals: iron (Fe), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni). This chapter illustrates i) surface density of states of cleaved ferromagnetic Fe, ii) majority-spin and minority spin energy bands of seven-layer Fe(001) film, iii) energy bands for ferromagnetic iron, iv) experimental dispersion of a minority surface band compared to theoretical dispersion determined from the 13-layer FLAPW calculation, v) partial densities of states, vi) contour plots of (a) charge and (b) spin densities of a seven-layer hcp Co(001) single slab, vii) electronic energy bands of a seven layer hcp Co(001) single slab, viii) a summary of surface-state dispersion for Co. Layer by layer and by spin projected charge populations for s-, p-, and d-derived states and magnetic moments M in Co are tabulated. This chapter also illustrates i) surface density of states of cleaved ferromagnetic Ni, ii) partial densities of states, iii) majority-spin subbands and minority-spin subbands for a 32-layer (111) Ni film.
