Abstract

This chapter illustrates electronic structure of the 3d transition metals, nickel (Ni). Illustrations include i) majority-spin energy bands for a seven-layer Ni(001) film; ii) total electronic charge density and total spin density of the upper half of a seven-layer Ni(001) film in the (110) plane perpendicular to the surface; iii) self-consistent total valence charge density in the (110) bulk Ni plane; iv) Ni(001) surface density of states; v) dispersion of the surface state with parallel momentum; vi) surface resonance band structure for Ni(001) and bulk band structure of Ni; vii) experimental dispersion relations compared with the theoretical predictions for the image-potential states; viii) Ni(110) projected bulk band structure; (ix) final-state energies as a function of k11; (ix) 2PPE spectrum of the first three image states of Ni; and (x) Schematic representation of the potential in the vicinity of the Ni surface. A summary of data for the (111) and (001) faces of Ni, and a summary of experimental and theoretical binding energies for the Ni(111) surface states are provided in a table.
