4.1.1.3.1 Lattice vectors, reciprocal lattice vectors

Abstract

This chapter discusses the microscopic approach to surface phonons. This chapter also presents a brief discussion on lattice vectors and reciprocal lattice vectors. A crystal structure is characterized by a Bravais lattice, which consists of primitive unit cells whose periodic repetition generates the entire crystal, and a basis, which constitutes atoms within a given unit cell. Surface Brillouin zones for the (001), (110), and (111) surfaces of a face-centered cubic lattice and the (001) surface of a body-centered cubic lattice are illustrated.
