7.1.2 Elastic scattering: the atom-surface potential

Abstract

This chapter provides information on atom-surface potentials, as determined mostly by elastic scattering. The atom-surface interaction consists of a short-range repulsion V rep and a long range attraction V att, with V rep coming predominantly from the top atom layer on the surface and V att almost entirely from van der Waals dispersion force. A typical atom-surface potential graph for He-Ag(110) is shown.
