Abstract

This chapter discusses the properties of atomic defects and resistivity recovery in lithium (Li). Although lithium transforms at low temperature into a hcp phase (or hcp+fcc), the resistivity recovery spectrum following e--irradiation at Tirr < 6 K is very similar as for potassium (bcc, also at low temperature), and sodium (partly, bcc, at low temperature), indicating similar defect properties in these three alkali metals. Common to the three metals is the onset of migration for SIA’s below 6K, and stage III near 15-16K (in lithium at 16.5K). As other alkali metals, lithium received attention in early experimental research by high-temperature equilibrium measurements, e.g. electrical resistivity investigations near Tm. The properties of Frenkel defects (FD), self-interstitial atoms (SIA), and vacancies (V) in lithium are tabulated. The resistivity recovery of electron-irradiated lithium, isochronal and derivative curve is illustrated.
